Bathroom Window Blinds: Privacy and Moisture-Proof Options
A bathroom blind has two jobs that don't always agree: complete privacy, especially at night, and standing up to steam every single day.
In short
- Choose synthetic fabrics: vinyl-coated roller shades and polyester are the safest bets.
- For night privacy, use light-filtering or blackout fabric, never a screen.
- Top-down/bottom-up shades give daylight from above with the lower glass covered.
- Good ventilation protects any window covering from mildew.

Privacy first
At night, with the lights on, a bathroom window is on display. Screen fabrics, which you can see through by day, become see-through from outside at night. Choose a light-filtering fabric, which lets daylight through but hides detail, or a blackout fabric for complete privacy. See privacy without losing daylight.
Moisture
Steam is the enemy of many window coverings. It warps wood, makes natural fibres sag and mark, and encourages mildew.
- Best: roller shades in vinyl-coated or PVC-backed fabric. They wipe clean and don't mind humidity.
- Good: polyester zebra blinds and honeycomb shades in synthetic fabrics, in bathrooms with a working fan.
- Avoid: natural-fibre Roman shades and fabrics that need dry cleaning, especially near a tub or shower.
Top-down/bottom-up shades
For a window beside the tub or vanity, a top-down/bottom-up shade covers the lower glass while the top lets in daylight and a glimpse of sky. It's the best way to have privacy and a bright bathroom at the same time. See top-down/bottom-up shades.

Windows in or over the shower
A window inside a shower gets soaked daily, which no fabric shade enjoys. Frosted or obscure glass is the usual answer there. For a window near, but not in, the shower, a vinyl roller shade is the toughest choice.
Small and high windows
Small bathroom windows often sit high on the wall, out of easy reach. A cordless shade with a lift handle, or a motorized one, saves stretching over the tub or toilet.
Ventilation and mildew
Run the fan during and after showers, and raise the shade now and then so the fabric and the glass can dry. Wipe vinyl fabrics with mild soapy water if spots appear. Our cleaning guide has more.
Matching the rest of the house
From outside, a bathroom shade sits in a row with the others. Choosing the same fabric family and backing colour as nearby rooms keeps the front of the house looking uniform. See choosing blind colours.
Common questions
What blinds are best for a bathroom?
Roller shades in vinyl-coated or PVC-backed fabric are the most moisture-proof. Top-down/bottom-up honeycomb shades are best when you want daylight with privacy.
Can people see through light-filtering blinds at night?
Light-filtering fabric hides detail, but bright lights inside can show shadows. For complete night privacy in a bathroom, choose blackout fabric.
Are zebra blinds OK in a bathroom?
Yes, in polyester and in a bathroom with a working fan. Close them fully for privacy.
