Triple Shades Explained: Soft Light with Adjustable Vanes
Triple shades look like a cross between a sheer curtain and a blind. Soft fabric vanes float between two sheer layers, and tilting them takes the room from bright to private.

In short
- Three layers: a front sheer, soft fabric vanes and a back sheer.
- Tilt the vanes for privacy; roll the whole shade up for a clear view.
- The light is softer and more even than with zebra blinds.
- Best in living and dining rooms. For bedrooms, add a blackout layer.

How triple shades are made
A triple shade has three layers: a sheer fabric at the front, a sheer fabric at the back, and horizontal fabric vanes suspended between them. You may also hear them called sheer shades or sheer shadings. Because the vanes are soft fabric rather than hard slats, they bend light gently into the room instead of casting stripes.
How they work
- Vanes open: daylight passes through the sheers and around the open vanes. You see a soft, screened view out.
- Vanes closed: the vanes lie flat and overlap, giving privacy and a gentle glow.
- Raised: the whole shade rolls up into the headrail or cassette, leaving the window clear.
Triple shades or zebra blinds?
| Triple shades | Zebra blinds | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Soft, floating vanes | Crisp horizontal stripes |
| Light quality | Diffused and even | Brighter bands of light |
| Privacy when closed | Good | Good |
| View when open | Soft, through sheer | Through the sheer bands |
| Blackout | No | No |
| Care | Gentle dusting | Dust or wipe |
Both adjust light without raising the shade. Triple shades feel softer and more like fabric; zebra blinds feel more graphic and modern. See zebra blinds: pros and cons.

Light and privacy
With the vanes closed, triple shades give good privacy and filter light, but they are not a blackout product. In bedrooms, pair them with blackout drapery or choose a different shade for that room.
Colours
White, ivory and soft greys give the most diffused, glowing light. Black and charcoal triple shades, like the ones above, look striking from inside and still give a clear view through the sheer when the vanes are open.
Rooms they suit
- Living rooms and family rooms where you want softness and privacy without curtains.
- Dining rooms and formal rooms.
- Street-facing windows where you want daylight with privacy. See privacy without losing daylight.
Caring for triple shades
The sheer layers are delicate. Dust them with a soft brush or a vacuum on low with a brush attachment, raise the shade fully with the vanes open, and avoid pulling on the vanes or folding the fabric. Spot-clean gently with a barely damp cloth. Our cleaning guide covers each product.
Motorized triple shades
Motorized triple shades can save favourite positions, such as vanes half-closed for afternoon privacy, and run on schedules with the rest of your shades. See are motorized blinds worth it.
We motorize triple shades with smart motors that deliver 2 Nm of torque, and you can save the exact vane angle you like as a favourite position. Every motor and its programming is covered by our full 3-year in-house warranty.
Sizes and stacking
Triple shades roll into a headrail or cassette at the top. Because the vanes add bulk, the roll is larger than a roller shade's, so on tall windows the headrail sits a little lower across the top of the glass. On very wide windows we may split the window into two shades so each one rolls evenly and the vanes stay level.
Common questions
Are triple shades the same as zebra blinds?
No. Zebra blinds use flat alternating bands. Triple shades have soft fabric vanes between two sheers, which gives a softer, more diffused light.
Can you see through triple shades?
With the vanes open, you get a soft view through the sheer. With the vanes closed, you get privacy.
Are triple shades blackout?
No. They filter light. For a dark bedroom, pair them with blackout drapery or choose a blackout roller shade.
Do triple shades work on large windows?
Yes, within the width limits of the fabric. Very wide windows are usually split into two or more shades that move together, especially when motorized.
