Custom vs. Store-Bought Blinds: What You're Really Paying For

Off-the-shelf blinds cost less up front, and sometimes they're the right call. Here's what changes when a blind is made to measure, so you can decide where it's worth it.

In short

  • Custom blinds are made to your exact window, so they fit without big light gaps.
  • You get far more fabric, colour and operating choices, including motors.
  • Professional measuring and installation remove the most common mistakes.
  • Stock blinds can be fine for rentals, utility rooms and quick fixes.

Fit

Stock blinds come in a set of standard sizes. Your windows almost certainly aren't standard, so a stock blind is either cut down in the store or left a little too narrow, which leaves light gaps and uneven edges. A custom blind is made to the exact width and height of your window, with the right clearance for an inside mount or the right overlap for an outside mount.

Fabric and colour range

Stock ranges cover a few colours in each style. Custom collections offer hundreds of fabrics: textures, openness factors for screens, true blackout, room-darkening, and colours matched to your trim or window frames. You can also keep one fabric and cassette colour across the whole house, which is hard to do with whatever is on the shelf that week.

Hardware and operation

Custom blinds come with better mechanisms as standard: smooth clutches, cassettes that hide the roll, side channels, and the option of cordless or motorized operation. Motors in particular are rarely available off the shelf in the sizes most homes need.

Measuring and installation

The two most common problems with blinds bought in a box are measuring mistakes (inside versus outside mount, deductions, forgetting the depth) and installation (brackets in drywall without anchors, blinds out of level). When we measure and install, those are our responsibility, not yours. See how to measure windows for blinds if you would rather do it yourself.

After the sale

If a custom blind needs adjusting, you call a local team you have met, not a help line. That is most important for motorized shades, which may need pairing with a new phone or smart home hub years later.

When stock blinds make sense

  • Short-term rentals or a home you are about to sell.
  • Garages, workshops and utility rooms.
  • A temporary fix while you decide what you really want.
  • A tight budget for secondary rooms.

What drives the price of custom

The size of each window, the fabric collection, the cassette or headrail, whether it is motorized, and how many windows are in the order. Your quote lists each window separately so you can see where the money goes and decide room by room. Our home page also has a side-by-side comparison of local, online and big-box options.

Warranty and service you can reach

With custom work, ask who handles a warranty claim and how. Our motorized blinds and curtains come with a full 3-year in-house warranty on the motor and its programming: you call us, and our own team looks after it. That is more important than people expect, because motorized shades are set up for your windows and your smart home, and the people who set them up are the right people to look after them.

Common questions

Are custom blinds much more expensive?

It depends on the product and the size. For many windows the difference is smaller than people expect, especially once installation is included. The free quote shows you exactly.

Can I install custom blinds myself?

If you buy online, yes, but the measuring and installing are then up to you. When we measure and install, getting the fit right is our job.

How long do custom blinds take?

Longer than taking a box off a shelf, because each one is made after we measure. You get a timeline with your quote.

Do store-bought motorized blinds come programmed?

Usually you set them up yourself with the maker's app. Our motorized shades are programmed, paired and tested at installation, and that programming is covered by our 3-year in-house warranty.
