Blinds for Casement and Crank Windows: Fitting Around the Handles
Casement windows open with a crank, and that crank handle sits right where a blind wants to hang. Getting the depth right is the whole game.

In short
- The crank handle uses up part of the frame depth, so measure what's left.
- Inside mounts work when the shade clears the handle; outside mounts work everywhere.
- Casements open outward, so you can usually crank them with the shade down.
- Inward-opening tilt-and-turn windows need a different approach.

What casement windows need
Casement windows hinge at the side and open outward with a crank; awning windows hinge at the top. Both have an operator handle on the inside of the frame, and that handle sticks out into the space where an inside-mounted shade would hang.
Measure the depth that's left
Measure from the glass (or the window's inside frame) to the face of the trim, then measure how far the crank handle projects. The shade's headrail or cassette, and the fabric hanging below it, need to fit in front of the handle. We measure both at the visit.
Inside mount, when there's room
If the frame is deep enough, an inside mount looks clean and keeps the trim visible. Slim roller shades, zebra blinds and honeycomb shades have compact headrails that fit many casement frames.
Outside mount, when there isn't
If the frame is shallow, mount the shade on the trim or the wall above the window, projecting far enough to clear the handle. It blocks more light at the edges too.
Folding handles
Many casement operators can take a folding or low-profile handle, which gives the shade more room. They're available from window hardware suppliers.
Opening the window with the shade down
Casement and awning windows in Canada usually open outward, so the sash moves away from the shade. As long as the handle clears the fabric, you can crank the window open with the shade down.

Tilt-and-turn and inward-opening windows
Tilt-and-turn windows swing into the room, so a shade mounted on the frame or wall would be in the way. They need a covering that moves with the sash, or one mounted high enough above the opening to clear the swing. We'll look at how your windows open before recommending anything.
Motorized casement windows
Motorized shades are especially handy on casement windows over counters or furniture: no reaching past the crank to pull the shade down. See smart motors for blinds.
Common questions
Will a blind hit my crank handle?
Not if the depth is measured properly. If the handle leaves too little room, an outside mount or a folding handle solves it.
Can I open my casement window with the blind down?
Usually yes. Casement windows open outward, so you can crank them open as long as the handle clears the fabric.
Can blinds go on tilt-and-turn windows?
Yes, with a covering that moves with the sash or sits clear of its swing. We check how your windows open at the visit.
